About this event
Cultivating a Mind that is Both Gentle and Fearless A practitioner who has matured to the point of benefiting others carries two qualities within: the capacity for gentleness, and the capacity for courage.
Deity practice deeply activates these innate qualities—the “peaceful deity” and the “wrathful deity” within the mind—so that we can embody both compassion and strength.
These two qualities arise from the same luminous mind. Ideally, we train in both aspects simultaneously, so that we can be, at once, like a bodhisattva with lowered, compassionate gaze, and like a vajra being with fierce, penetrating presence.
In Mingyur Rinpoche’s Tergar system of teaching and practice, there are two principal yidams—one “gentle” and one “powerful”. The primary peaceful deity is White Tara, and the primary wrathful deity is Dorje Drolo.
Dorje Drolo: A Precious Lineage Treasure of Mingyur Rinpoche
Dorje Drolo, the wrathful manifestation of Guru Rinpoche, is the “primary wrathful deity” in Tergar practice, and a precious lineage treasure of Mingyur Rinpoche.
This is because it is a terma teaching revealed by the first Mingyur Rinpoche, and it holds a special power to transform the harmful energies of troubled times into stability and protection.
As a hidden wrathful deity practice, Rinpoche did not teach it publicly in the past. It was practiced only within monasteries and three-year retreat settings.
Each Tibetan New Year, this practice is performed at Tergar Osel Ling Monastery in Nepal to remove obstacles. However, it has largely remained mysterious—many simply recite the Tibetan sounds without understanding their meaning, let alone grasping the essential points of the practice.
But in response to the increasing instability in the world today, out of his compassion, Rinpoche has made a special exception—offering a complete transmission of Dorje Drolo, including empowerment, reading transmission, and instruction.
In these uncertain times, this teaching is more important than ever. The conditions to receive it are rare—please do not miss this opportunity.
Outer, Inner, and Secret Dorje Drolo
Rinpoche says: “This is not anger, but the courageous expression of compassion and wisdom at their fullest.”
This yidam can be understood on three levels-outer, inner, and secret.
In Mingyur Rinpoche’s approach, deity practice never remains at an external level alone, but integrates nature-of-mind practice with the development stage. This is the true Dorje Drolo that Rinpoche transmits:
Outer Dorje Drolo is the vajra armor that protects awareness.
His wrath arises from great compassion,
and his manifestation shatters the illusion of ego-clinging,
allowing you to remain unwavering like a vajra amid the chaos of the world.
Inner Dorje Drolo is the practice itself.
In this retreat, the development stage practice of the Copper Tube sadhana will be taught— a rare opportunity, as Rinpoche will be offering this teaching to students in Asia for the first time. To encounter, learn, and practice this is truly a great fortune.
Secret Wrathful Guru Rinpoche is your own luminous mind,
complete with all qualities—especially the power of fierce protection.
Through this practice, it can be deeply activated,
guiding you to recognize within your own mind
the “primary wrathful deity” that arises from great compassion.
