Dear Dharma friends,

Background relating to the Prayer Rituals in Osel Ling

In light of the social unrest, frequent disasters, and a global pandemic that have affected many around the world in recent years, many dharma friends have sought support from Osel Ling’s sangha community to pray for the blessings of the Buddha and bodhisattvas, and to accumulate merits and remove obscurations. Thus at the request of Tergar Asia’s Fundraising team and Community team, Osel Ling’s sangha community have kindly agreed to conduct prayer rituals and arrange lamp offerings for the benefits of all beings.

The prayer rituals would be conducted by the teachers and students of Osel Ling after class every day for one hour, comprising of opening aspirations, meditation, contemplation, praying and reciting mantras and dedicating merits.

Besides accumulating merits and removing obstacles for yourself, you may also dedicate the merits to your parents, relatives and friends, to accumulate merits for them or celebrate their birthdays. You may also send them well wishes on a special occasion, as we have designed various e-cards so that your wishes could be sent to these relatives and friends by email on a date designated by you.

Dharma is priceless and merit cannot be quantified by the amount of the donation. However much the gift, as long as the motivation is pure, the merits we accumulate would be as vast as our aspirations. We invite you to engage in meritorious deeds for the benefit of yourself and your family and friends: by nurturing the virtuous causes and conditions, may wisdom grow and all disasters and obstacles be pacified; and may the world have peace and prosperity, and all undertakings be auspicious.

All donations received by Tergar Asia from these prayer rituals and lamp offerings would be passed on to the Tergar monasteries to form part of their funds for cultivating and training sangha members, without any deduction for administrative costs.

Remarks:

  1. Each type of activity will be held only once a week. When you provide a list of person(s) to whom merits are to be dedicated, please do so in English or with pronunciations in English. The list will be placed in the mandala to receive blessings.
  2. Frequently asked questions:
    1. If I wish to celebrate my mother’s birthday or send wishes to friends or relatives, can we designate a specific date?
Your e-card sending such good wishes will be sent off (by email) on the date you have designated.  However, since each type of activity will be conducted once a week, the prayer ritual itself may not match your requested date.
    2. Is there any limit on the number of person to whom we dedicate merits?

Each time you may put down 50 characters which can be name of any company, individual, family, clan, class or group.

    3. What is the difference between the prayer rituals and the lamp offering?
The Prayer Rituals means the puja conducted after class every day for one hour by the teachers and students of Osel Ling, comprising of opening aspirations, meditation, contemplation and praying and reciting mantras and dedicating merits. The prayers for each day would be different.  Please see table listed above for details.
Lamp offering means the offering of LED lamp at the main shrine.  As for the merits relating to offering of lamp before Buddha, please various dharma texts and sutras.  The Sangha would download the list of the persons to whom the merits are to be dedicated (for the relevant puja) into a laptop and then put it in front of the Mandala for receiving blessings of the Buddha and bodhisattvas.
    4. How do we separate or make different options for different persons to whom the merits are to be dedicated?
You may put all the persons to whom the merits are to be dedicated in one list for receiving blessings together.  If you find it necessary to separate them, then you will need to fill in multiple registration forms.
    5. Would the Prayer Rituals be conducted every day in long run?

The Prayer Rituals would be a regular activity but the prayers to be recited every day would be different given different subject involved.  Each subject will be conducted once a week.  The Prayer Rituals would be suspended if there is any special activities to be held at the monastery or due to school holiday. In such circumstances, all the relevant lists of those persons to whom the merits are to be dedicated will be arranged for blessing when the same prayers are to be recited in the next puja to be held.
If you request for the same prayer rituals to be held e.g. cremation chant for the dead for 49 consecutive days, then we would contact the monastery by email to see if there is sufficient manpower to arrange for this.

    6. What is meant by offering of lamp for one year?  How does this work?
Lamp offering means the offering of LED lamp at the main shrine.  As for the merits relating to offering of lamp before Buddha, please various dharma texts and sutras. The Sangha would download the list of the persons to whom the merits are to be dedicated (for the relevant puja) into a laptop and then put it in front of the Mandala for receiving blessings of the Buddha and bodhisattvas.
    7. After participating in the Prayer Rituals, shall we dedicate merits?
After participating in the Prayer Ritual, the Sanghai will arrange for dedication of merits to those persons mentioned in the List setting out the names of persons to whom the merits are to be dedicated.  Each puja will finish by 17:00 Nepal time (i.e. 19:15 PRC/ HK/ Taiwan/ Singapore/ Malaysian time).  Each participant may dedicate merits by himself or herself with thoughts of kindness.
