2020 Tergar Annual Retreat – FAQ

Q: Could someone new to the Joy of Living programme register for both Level 1 and 2 courses?

A: To register for the Joy of Living Level 2 online retreat, you must have already attended the Level 1 course and completed the homework of 50 hours of formal meditation practice. Since the Level 2 online retreat will be held only three weeks after the Level 1 online retreat, there is hardly enough time for participants to finish the required homework for Level 1. Hence, we will not accept registration for both Levels 1 and 2 from someone new to the Joy of Living programme.

Tergar Asia has in the past offered the Joy of Living Level 1 and 2 courses jointly to newcomers during its annual retreats. This was because the conducive environment of an in-person retreat makes intensive practice possible, thus allowing participants to quickly gain the experience they need to progress on the path. Such conditions are lacking in an online retreat.

Mingyur Rinpoche has repeatedly reminded us to abide by the homework requirement, as it is important to learn step by step. The Joy of Living Level 1 is the very important foundation of the entire Tergar meditation programme, therefore we encourage all participants to fully experience the online retreat and give themselves sufficient time to complete the required homework before registering for the next-level course.

Q: What are the prerequisites of the Joy of Living meditation courses? What are the homework requirements?

A: The Joy of Living is a path of meditation study and practice that can be followed by anyone, regardless of religious or cultural orientation. The Joy of Living programme contains three levels. Apart from Level 1, there are prerequisites for joining Levels 2 and 3. All three levels also have homework requirements.

Q: What are the prerequisites for the Path of Liberation courses? What are the homework requirements?

A: Please refer to the schedule of the retreat/course you wish to attend or have registered for. Participants are expected to fully attend the course. Absence in any of the classes will mean they have to retake the course to progress to the next level of the programme.

Q: May I record the teachings or other sessions of the retreat/course?

A: Rinpoche has instructed that none of the sessions of the retreat/course may be recorded. We ask that everyone abides by this rule.

Q: If I miss a live teaching session, could I watch the recording later?

A: No recordings of the sessions will be provided for rewatching. Participants are expected to fully attend the course. Absence in any of the classes will mean they have to retake the course to progress to the next level of the programme.

Q: Going away to do a retreat is not possible during the Covid-19 pandemic. But since I don't live on my own, my home environment is not conducive for a quiet retreat. Do I still meet the requirement for attending this online retreat?

A: Try your best to make arrangements for a conducive environment. This is one way of showing respect for Rinpoche’s teachings. For example, you may use earphones to cut down on environment noise, or speak with your family members beforehand to ask for their understanding, so as to minimise disruption.

Q: Apart from the chanting and the Q and A sessions, do I have to observe silence during the retreat?

A: At previous Tergar Asia retreats, participants were asked to observe silence for at least part of the retreat. But in consideration of the different conditions of an online retreat, we would not ask participants to observe silence. However, we do encourage you to try to keep silent as far as you can, as observing silence will be helpful for your practice.

If you have questions about the online programme, please feel free to get in touch with Tergar Asa’s programme team.
