What is JOL?

Joy of Living is a path of meditation practice that is open to everyone, regardless of religious or cultural background. Meditation enables us to discover a lasting contentment that is not subject to the fluctuating conditions of the external world, and to nurture the qualities of wisdom and compassion that naturally manifest from awareness itself.

Though rooted in Buddhist teachings, the practices taught in the Joy of Living programme are not religious in nature. They deal with the basic functions of the mind, such as mindful awareness and the movements towards happiness and away from suffering. In working with these qualities of mind, we gradually transform our relationship with our everyday experience, and learn to approach every thought, feeling and sensory experience with unconditional warmth and acceptance.

The programme contains three levels:

Level 1: Calming the Mind
Level 2: Opening the Heart
Level 3: Awakening Wisdom

The Four Noble Truths (2 sessions)

Date:      October 13, 2.30pm-5pm (First session)

October 14, 2.30pm-5pm (Second session)

Ticket:    HK$50 & HK$20 (Tickets for each session are sold separately)

The Four Noble Truths form the core of all Buddhist paths and traditions. In fact, the Buddha felt these teachings were so important that he gave them many times, to many different audiences. Since the Buddha’s time, these teachings have been handed down to us in a collection of writings known as the sutras.

“The Four Noble Truths consist of a simple, direct analysis of the challenges and possibilities of the human condition… Even in translations of the sutras, it’s plain to see that the Buddha didn’t present the Four Noble Truths as a set of concrete practices and beliefs. Instead, he offered the Four Noble Truths as a practical guide for individuals to recognise, in terms of their own lives, their basic situation, the causes of the situation, the possibility that the situation might be transformed, and the means of transformation… In a way, the Four Noble Truths can be seen as a pragmatic, step-by-step approach to healing what we might nowadays call a ‘dysfunctional’ perspective.”

– Mingyur Rinpoche, Joyful Wisdom

Do You Really Want to be Happy?

Date: October 13, 7.30pm-9.15pm

Ticket:    HK$50 & HK$20

When the pace of material progress exceeds the development of inner knowledge, people seem to suffer deep emotional conflicts without any method to deal with them. The more abundant our material items, the more external distractions there are, and the more easily we lose connection to our inner lives. Just think, for example, of the number of people who look for a sense of excitement by going to a new restaurant, starting a new relationship, or moving to a different job. The trouble with all these solutions is that they are, by nature, temporary.

“The more problematic issue is that most people don’t have a very clear idea of what happiness is, and consequently find themselves creating conditions that lead them back to the dissatisfaction they so desperately seek to eliminate. That being the case, it would be a good idea to look at happiness, unhappiness, and their underlying causes a bit more closely.”

– Mingyur Rinpoche, The Joy of Living

The Power of Awareness

Date: October 14, 7.30pm-9.15pm

Ticket:    HK$50 & HK$20

Awareness is always free. Confusion cannot obscure awareness. Ignorance cannot obscure awareness. There are no obstacles to awareness. It is always free and always present.

“Our awareness is with us all the time, no matter how many thoughts you have, how many emotions you have, how much confusion you have, it doesn’t change awareness. Awareness is awesome. But there’s one problem – we don’t recognise our own awareness. If we don’t recognise our own awareness, then the qualities of awareness cannot manifest for us… The whole purpose of meditation is to recognise awareness and to maintain that recognition. That is the meaning of meditation. As you become more and more familiar with your own awareness, you become more free, more happy, more flexible.”

– Mingyur Rinpoche
