The intention when meditating with emotion is to stay steady with every sensation, just as we might do with sound meditation. Just listening. Just feeling. No commentary. Resting the mind on the breath can turn breath into support for maintaining recognition of awareness, the same as with anger, rejection, and embarrassment.

Normal pain--that is to say, the pain that we want to get rid of--is static and solid, and arises from a mind that is stuck in a negative attitude toward the pain. The recognition of awareness can hold the pain without taking a position, or adding a story. This makes it immeasurably easier for the pain to lessen or move on. We cannot change pain directly; but we can change our relationship to it, and this can reduce suffering.

If we could step back to look at the situation more objectively, we might see that people who yell at us are upset over something that may have nothing to do with us.

Living, Dying, and Beyond:
Mahamudra Wisdom for the Bardo States
with Mingyur Rinpoche
March 15–17, 2024

In Vajrayana Buddhism, the various stages or transitions of living and dying are viewed as powerful opportune moments to awaken. These stages, referred to as “intermediate states,” or bardos, present a unique opportunity to discover the heart of enlightenment in the present moment.

In bardo practices, learning how to die in awareness teaches us how to live in awareness. Most importantly, when we begin to see how we experience a small death in the passing of each moment of our lives, the distinction between the concepts of life and death begins to dissolve, and we can reconnect with who we truly are by simply resting in our own awareness, which is the essence of Mahamudra — the profound lineage of teachings on how to discover the buddha within our own minds.
